GRIEVANCES
The purpose of a Grievance Procedure is to ensure that an individual member of staff who feels aggrieved about the way they have been treated, either by a manager or by a colleague is given the opportunity to have their issue(s) resolved in a fair and just manner.
The procedure may also be used to deal with issues where it is perceived that the application by individual managers of policy and procedures is unfair or unjustified.
There are 4 stages to the procedure which are:
Stage 1 – Informal Stage
Stage 2 - Formal Stage
Stage 3 – Appeal Stage
Stage 4 – Special Appeal Stage
Right to be represented
You can make a reasonable request to be accompanied at any informal discussion. You have a legal right to be represented by a Fire Brigade's Union official at the formal stages.
There are two types of resolution possible:
Facilitative Resolution: Is where both parties agree the issues and the resolution. On some occasions there may be compromise on one or each side to establish common ground.
Directive Resolution: This is where there is no common ground between the aggrieved party and the Panel hearing the Grievance. In this respect the Panel has to decide the outcome of the Resolution Meeting.
